Graham Wardrop the dunstan

Select language to translate this lyric

I yearn to view the Dunstan Range to see the leaning rock
The purple hazy distance from an isolated block
Fruit trees for a garden a river for a pool
A rocking chair a fireplace /with willow wood for fuel
I yearn to feel the summer's heat to harvest wild thyme
To never leave this dusty patch of earth, to call it mine
I'll irrigate this desert be a self-sufficient man
And when the deeds of day are done I'll sit and watch the land
My view displays the mountains that the tourists pay to see
They flock from countless distant lands I see it all for free
My mind set loose to wander o'er the valleys and the streams
These mountains are the playground of the urban dwellers dreams
My view is ever changing as the seasons glow and fade
Storms roll up and drown the hills wild and unafraid
And when the Sun dissolves the rain a liquid, pastel dawn
My picture is restored anew the vision is reborn
The stars that grace the Dunstan skies are bright enough to touch
And never did the moonlight bless the frosted fields with such
A crystal definition /that the eye can plainly see
A vision so transparent to be called Eternity
For winter in the city is so dull and dense and stark,
And when the Sun has set at night then all it is is dark
A corrugated iron fence and leafless trees comprise
The only visual morsels upon which to starve your eyes
I yearn for isolation for the tramper's lonely view
The sculptured rock and rose hip the Clutha's turquoise blue
An echo of the gold rush stirs the breeze, the tussock wave
And I sit and claim a past life in some long-dead miner's cave
I long to view the Dunstan Range her ever changing faces
I yearn to wander long and free exploring open spaces
I long to breath her vintage air and through her hills to roam
I yearn to view the Dunstan I long to view the Dunstan Range
I yearn to view the Dunstan I yearn to call her home
