yesterday
lying there by the back road
in a box
a little seedling tried to grow
drying out in the cold but holding on
i took her home where it’s safe from the winter sun
but in the springtime
blossoms all around
i’ll take what was once mine
and put her in the ground
how it would feel
to spread your roots out
to grab the earth
to be in the ground
and when it rains
in the soil she’ll unfold
branches high
poised and regal in the sky
birds will come
build a home for their little ones
when i’m old
in her shade i’ll rest my bones
in the springtime
blossoms all around
i’ll take this little life
and put it in the ground
how it would feel
to spread your roots out
to grab the earth
to be in the ground
