Who Was Keeping Watch?
Who Was Keeping Watch That Night?
The disco lights were flashing and the bass beat down daylight,
As she plied her way down river on that long and fateful night.
The people all on board her all danced the night away -
They had all their lives before them after they had worked all day.
But who was keeping watch that night – who was there to see?
Not a single thing should go amiss and everything should be –
Safe as though their guardian angels watched all over them –
Who only wanted to have some fun – and then come back safe again.
That dredger she was making way on her working mission she
Drew far too near the “Marchioness” and nobody could see
She got way too close, it seemed, that night than she ever should have been
You would think that what then happened next could be only a bad dream.
But who was keeping watch that night – who was there to see?
Not a single thing should go amiss and everything should be –
Safe as though their guardian angels watched all over them –
Who only wanted to do their work and come back safe again.
“That ship I see behind us – is she not a little near?”
Asked a young girl of the skipper who thought he should show no fear.
But what did he then say to her and what did he then do?
Would it help us all to know that now would it help those grieving through?
Their time of pain that may last yet a long, long lifetime through –
Would it help those and the rest of us to know that far less than few –
Accidents would happen now to snatch young lives away –
For safety there’s no compromise for carelessness no way.
But who was keeping watch that night – who was there to see?
Not a single thing should go amiss and everything should be –
Safe as though their guardian angels watched all over them –
Who only wanted to have some fun – and then come back safe again.
How could it happen then – however could it be –
That help when it was summoned to them went so indirectly –
Losing precious time that could have saved more precious ones –
What was wrong with help that night – is this the best that can be done?
But who was keeping watch that night – who was there to see?
Not a single thing should go amiss and everything should be –
Safe as though their guardian angels watched all over them –
Who only wanted to give some help – and then come back safe again.
