Eleventh Chapter
The Werkelmann crouches alone in front of the girl's shrine (in a princess dress). He pushes the lid off the mortuary and looks spellbound at the rigid child's body, which is wrapped in a fine linen cloth and resembles the face of a childlike prostitute. The child's head was carefully embalmed and the softly lined lips were smeared with red lipstick. Like a recently deceased girl, this delicate creature looks out of the putrid crypt, her spherical eyes wide open. It is the most beautiful creature that Kezman harbors in his graveyard. Completely crazy and enchanted by the graceful stature of the corpse, the workman begins to kiss the dead woman. When the stench of dead meat attracts a jackdaw, he loses his temper.
THE WERKEMAN (speaks)
Your hair is so beautiful!
Your mouth is so beautiful!
Your body is so beautiful!
Your body is beautiful!
Piano starts.
THE WERKELMANN (completely beside himself)
My child , so beautiful,
Your mouth is pretty and shines so wonderfully.
I'm so crazy about your resinous hair
I'm so crazy about your pair of lips.
It the devil kisses you.
He strokes you harshly.
He ruffles your hair...
and licks your cheeks.
(Violin)
THE WERKELMANN
Death kisses your lips.
Only your strawberry mouth is hot.
(violin)
A crow falls down and chops off the flesh of your range.
