Luke Thompson stride by stride

Make your mark and stand out on the street
while they measure you in feet
call you in and cut you loose to try another day
write as if a shadow of yourself
drink to goodluck and good health
then smoke a hundred cigarettes on top a Friday high
I don’t mind it all the same
and I never would complain
just set a steady walking pace and go
leave the shadows to themselves
they’ll dance upon the rocks and shells
we are not late for we have nowhere to go
The builder builds his building to a plan
then we all work there for the man
sit in offices, surrender what we could have been
until the day we’re useless to the cause
then we’re quietly shown the door
we’re not needed anymore just servants of the crown
And I, I am learning how to roll
Take my time less the time spent takes its toll
all my life I’ve been pushing along this road
Stride by Stride one step closer to my goal
The market leaves me wary of the world
the oyster wary of the pearl
the workman wary of the never ending jungle rise
As if to wish the winter well away
the sun is careful not to burn
It just waits there for its turn before the burning starts
