Tressell of Mugsborough
Tressell of Mugsborough June 1983
(can be sung to the tune of âCome All Ye Tramps And Hawkersâ â or â âThe Durham Strikeâ)
In the town of Mugsborough weâre sorry for to say â
The Workers are still sweating hard for a pittance they call âpayâ;
Itâs nigh on a hundred years now since Robert Tressellâs day â
And yet well nearly all support this system in some way.
We need not state the reasons why the workers have been fooled â
The Tory Press â the media have us all so well ruled!
It makes you sick the way they grovel and the way they drool â
On folk like Mrs. Thatcher â whoâre so vicious and so cruel.
Thereâs so much work that needs to be done to meet with human need â
But many of us donât have enough even to clothe and feed.
Theyâve forced the dole queue on us as a way of keeping down
Our wages that we spend to keep the wheel of life going round.
The âjoblessâ have to search each day for âworkâ to do while still â
Thereâs so much work needs doing - using all our sweat and skill.
Weâre stopped from doing useful work thatâs needed to be done â
While so much âworkâ thatâs done - todayâs no use to anyone.
We wish that Robert Tressell could come back to us today â
Heâd be surprised to find we havenât yet all changed the way â
We run our crazy system so that peopleâs wants and needs â
Are still not satisfied (be)cause of the ruling classâs greed.
Through this whole world over weâre still sorry for to say â
The workers all still listen to the rot the Tories say.
We wish a lad like Robbie Tressellâd come to us again â
And that his life and work have not been totally in vain.
