IT'S ABOUT TIME
(German: Hannes Wader)
Far in the Champagne in the midsummer green,< br/>where poppies bloom between grave crosses,
there the grasses whisper and sway lightly
in the wind that gently blows over the grave field.
On your cross I find, dead Soldier,
not your name, just numbers, and someone
painted the number nineteen hundred and sixteen,
and you weren't even nineteen years old.
REFRAIN:
Yes too They have already lied to you,
just as they still do to us today.
And you gave them everything:
your strength, your youth, your life.
Have you, dead soldier, ever loved a girl?
Certainly not, because only where there is peace
can tenderness and trust flourish.
You were a soldier, to die, not to be young.
Maybe you thought to yourself, I'll fall soon,
take my pleasure as it comes by force.
You were determined to do that, you did but then
you were ashamed of yourself and never did it.
REFRAIN
Only the cross remained as the only trace
of your life. But listen to my vow
to fight for peace and to be vigilant.
If humanity falls for lies again,
then it may happen that soon no one will more lives,
no one to bury the billions of dead.
But there are more and more people willing to
prevent this war, it is time.
